Music always gets hammered down to the Three A's.
Axe, Attitude, and Audience. Me, I had an Axe and an Attitude.
All I had to do was get the third one.
Nah. Never did. I know the Medias like to make it look like we did, or at least that I wanted it and that's what fueled my music.
[That used to make him so fucking angry too. 50 years after Johnny blew up thousands of people, and every once and a while there was still a stray Media who would ask him about how Silverhand influenced each of his albums.]
Hell, there's some truth to that. Except that he didn't have shit to do with my music. I wrote a bunch of Samurai's hits all by myself. And everything after is all me.
Instead of thinking of it in terms of a lover riding back into your life after death--It's more like a brother. A best friend. The person who pissed you off the most but also made you believe you could rule the whole fucking world.
Then, you lose them to their own hubris and they make sure to take thousands of innocent people with them. They're gone for 50 fucking years only to show up as the hottest edgerunner you've ever laid eyes on...
And I've seen a lot of handsome mercs in my time, kid.
Never really followed them, honestly. Just figured I'd ask since I don't know you like V does. All I have to go off of is decade old rumors and things you or V mention.
I can understand that. Feel the same way about V. Both of em. They're my brothers. Family. I mean, neither of them are terrorists, I don't think, but I'm not sure anything would change even if they did something terrible.
[Also he doesn't think V has it in him to give any one entity a big enough fuck you to cause the death of thousands of innocent bystanders as well in the process. That's definitely just a Johnny thing.]
Kid? Are you going to play the age card on me now, old man? You're right though. The two of you make a handsome pair. Or, well, the three of you.
You're not wrong, but you look like you stopped aging at 29, and I look like life has put me through so much shit I could pass for 40. You can call me whatever you like though, you do have the years to back it up.
[After their conversation on the net, Kerry is interested in meeting the guy who has access to so much music. There's an idea forming in his head and he can see why that library will be useful.
Plus, he's always curious about folks who come from a future more along than his own.
He waits for his visitor eagerly, and when he finally knocks on the door goes to answer it with a smile.]
[For his part, Ethan's just happy to have someone to actually talk music with, too. He'll probably feel similarly about tech, if that subject happens.
In any case, he's not too long getting in his way, winding through now-familiar roads (what a strange thought for someone like him) to come knocking on Kerry's door. The warm welcome is nice, and Ethan tips his head first in greeting.
It covers the time it takes for him to type, and Kerry likely won't even balk at the synthetic voice much. Its vaguely feminine tone definitely hovers around Ethan's neck, and it's equally definite that the words are prerecorded in the screen at Ethan's left hand. He doesn't lip sync with them.]
{Thanks for inviting me. Nice to meet you. Ah, right. I'm Ethan.}
[That... might have been good to start with before going and meeting up, but whatever. Ethan is a decent average height, if a little lanky and gaunt, and he's... well, very pale. He looks eternally like he doesn't get enough sleep (which, admittedly, is true like half the time). Ah well. He'll step in without much hesitation, though there definitely a brief moment where his gaze flicks across the room, a little flat of paranoia that melts right back into curiosity.]
[Once Kerry realizes what Ethan is doing, he gives Ethan time and space to type out his words without comment. He's used to assistive devices from his work bringing attention to issues that would cause a need for them. He doesn't seem to think there's anything different about communicating like this at all.]
Nice to meet ya, Ethan. I'm Kerry.
[He probably should have been the one to make sure they exchanged names before inviting a random kid to his place, but he had been too hyped up to listen to some of Ethan's jams.]
[It's not an understatement to say that he's quick at the keys. They're soundless by nature, but it's easy to watch the keys light up in rapid succession. And he enters things one quick sentence at a time, leaving... fairly little to slow down communication. It's definitely a convenient little assistive device, for more reasons than Kerry knows.]
{Nice to meet you too, Kerry. Water sounds fine.}
[He drinks a lot of that, surprising no one. As to the lacking introductions prior, both men could blame music. For his part, Ethan's happy to give Kerry a moment to get that - it subsequently gives him time to pull open another screen. Should he be finding a place to sit? Maybe.
Both maintain that same uniform shape, but the data displayed is different. An actual composition program displays on the second, with a list of songs running down the left edge. They're sorted by name, and have information slotted for genre, tempo and, for whatever reason, colour. A fair few are also marked as works in progress, probably no surprise there either.]
[Kerry gets the water and brings two glasses of it back with him. One for Ethan and one for himself. He sits on his couch and looks over at what Ethan is doing curiously.]
Color? [He asks, once he notices that is displayed on the list.] You a synesthete?
[The water is taken with an easy reach, fingers still flicking through the list. When Kerry asks if he's a synesthete, though? It's the first time he hasn't had to clumsily explain that, and the fact actually makes Ethan blink a few times. Then he laughs softly, a much deeper tone than the assistive device. So at least, he has a voice of some kind. Whether it's usable is anyone's guess, of course.]
Mhm. {Chromesthesia and individual sounds and colours, personally. You're actually the first I haven't had to explain it to. Guess it's more common in the music industry though, huh?}
Not any more common as a condition, I don't think. [He frowns in thought.] ... There was a trend to try and mimic it with cyber software to enhance the music-going experience a couple decades back. [Something that was a controversy, but since when did corporations that made implants and programs for people's brains care about anything other than profit? He doesn't seem particularly proud that his industry tried to exploit a natural condition in such a way either.]
So, does my voice bring up a color for you? Or is it just certain kinds of sounds?
{What, like some kind of visualiser? I can't imagine that worked very well, given we have no control over what colours we see or how often.} [It's an interesting thought, though. People being suddenly inundated with colour they weren't used to anytime they heard something... what a mess that would be.
He doesn't envy the guinea pigs in that little experiment.]
{Speaking voices are a neutral zone for me, since they're not specific tones and notes, I guess. Yours is this... steel grey with a touch of bright silver, but that's because that's just what I see looking at you. The sound I hear at the sight of you doesn't match that at all.}
[He shrugs, just totally content in this fact. It's normalcy, for him.]
{What, you mean like you yourself? I imagine you look just like you're used to looking.}
[He actually chuckles at that, raising a hand to cover his mouth.]
{Some people call it an aura, what I see. Matches your speech - it's broadly steel grey, with interwoven lines of silver. So, a bit shiny. The sound I hear, though? That's a deep red, sort of raspberry red.}
[It's always funny, seeing different people react to it. Honestly, Kerry's a breath of fresh air here, given Ethan's getting a little tired of re-explaining the whole... everything, with himself.]
{I'll let you know. Don't think I've ever actually overloaded myself with one other person, though.}
[... Then he just stares off for a moment, considering that.]
{Well. Not in any non-intimate setting. Anyway, you can pick, if you'd like - either let me know and I'll select it or I can register your hand to use the screen. I have favourites, but I'm curious what you'd pick.}
[He's proud of the things he makes, okay, and the HUD is one of those. Really, he's more at ease than he thought he might be, but Kerry's got that force of personality - a showman through and through.]
[Kerry is curious about music he's not heard. He searches for anything made after 2077, to see what kind of rock music is created in Ethan's reality during an era after where Kerry currently is back home.
He notices there's none of his music though. Means Ethan is probably from a reality that is removed from his. He checks for colors that are similar to the ones that Ethan described from him too, wanting to see how the colors relate.]
[There are a lot of options, as he might expect - Ethan is absolutely one of those people who just consumes media to get a feel for it all. What Kerry will notice is that there's a particularly sharp drop-off in the 2200s, and it's something that takes almost a century to pick back up.
A lot of the rock music in question rests on the purple spectrum, and there's an interesting variance to be had in the difference between decades. Outliers here and there, the normal story really.
Reds, especially deeper reds, tend to lean toward genres akin to power metal, and grey and silver both mottle almost all genres.
And the music? Well, it varies a lot from decade to decade, branching to more experimental instruments and complex styles after the late 21st up until that break in options. Song titles never really seen to change though, implying something about the song with some fairly rare exceptions.]
